The Wayland Bltie Ridge Baptist Association Women’s Auxiliary held the 30th Annual Black History Event at the Wayland Blue Ridge Baptist Center, Rixeyville Virginia on Sunday, March 4.
Approximately 250 people were in attendance at the event which had been rescheduled because of the snow storm on February 25. Thirtysix people from the surrounding eight counties were honored for their contributions and leadership in their communities and for their services in the Christian community.
This event is sponsored each year as a fund raiser for the Wayland Blue Ridge Scholarship Fund, which makes scholarships available to college bound students within the churches of Wayland Blue Ridge Baptist Association. The Women’s Auxiliary is led by Nan Butler Roberts, President, a former resident of Sperryville and the daughter of Dorothy Butler. The event was chaired by Lillian Aylor of Sperryville.
Six Rappahannock residents were honored. Rachel Aylor, Sperryville was honored “Black Pearl” for Christianity Lifetime Achievement. Lillian Aylor, Sperryville, and Jennifer Gray, Amiss ville, were acknowledged “Black Pearls” for Community Service. James Russell, Sperryville, was honored “Black Pearl” of the Arts . Dorothy Butler, Sperryville, honored “Black Pearl” for African American Firsts.
