know what is going on in and around our county. We should get rid of some of the top-heavy positions within the school board administration and cut the wastefulness out of the budget.
Then we should save the $50,000 earmarked to fight Dominion and reinvest that money into our teachers’ raises.
Like most people in this county, I was told that the tax increase for last year was going to be hefty one. The residents of Rappahannock County were told it would be about a 20 percent increase. It was most people’s understanding that the 20 percent tax increase over the prior year’s tax bill would reflect a tax rate adjustment to have a total increase of only 20 percent.
When I received my tax bill, I felt as if I was hit with a sledgehammer. Most people I spoke to were in shock and disbelief of their tax bill. My taxes went up this past year by 75 percent, many residents’ taxes increased by as much as 100 percent. I honestly believe the county misled us on the tax increase.
Citizens of Rappahannock hold on to your wallets, it just gets worse. The last meeting I attended of the Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors, I heard supervisors say three times that they wanted to keep growth out of our county as well as not wanting our county to change.
If taxes continue to rise, our children and grandchildren will not be able to afford to live in this county. I heard an employee of Settle’s garage say that when she and her husband retire they will have to move out of this county.
