Then they can achieve diversity by varying the height of the plants, placing them on different levels created by steps, rocks and elevated planters, and using different shades of the same colors.
One advantage to gardening in a small area is that is - easier to lay out and plan and to create the sense of unity and order that leads to a harmonious effect. Use garden hoses or colored string to mark the perimeters. Place day pots around where the plants will go and move them around until you achieve the desired effect.
Making the borders curved rather than rigidly straight gives the illusion of a larger area and creates a sense of motion and flow.
