ness, prosperity and luck. Apparently they should have had more .of these spherical saviors in Salem - you can catch a witch with a gazing globe. Superstition has it that they cannot tear themselves away from their own image in the ball. Pretty handy, indeed.
Down here in the South, we're a bit more clever. Antebellum gazing globes were popular as spy gear south of the Mason-Dixon line. A carefully placed gazing globe allowed homeowners to see the reflection of approaching visitors, affording homeowners sufficient time to make themselves presentable (or hide from mothers-in-law bearing questionable gifts) before the guest arrived at the front door. They also used these treasures to snoop on their innocent daughters and would-be suitors on the front porch.
