* Decide on three or four main colors. Use lighter or darker tones of these colors to create a unified effect while affording variety at the same time. * Curve the borders of flowerbeds. Vary the depth of the beds, narrow in some places, wider in others. * Use accessories such as entry gates or arbors, benches or water features (ponds or fountains), garden statuary. * Plan for a succession of bloom, from early spring to late fall. Include plants that are winter hardy, so the garden will be pleasant to look at during the winter months. Use trees and shrubs to create a framework for the rest of the garden. * Plant shrubs and flowers that attract butterflies and hummingbirds.
