A homeowner on Sequoia Road called the Sheriff’s office on March 11, to report that they suspected that somebody had been using their hot tub while they were away. According to the report, the water temperature had been turned up to 100 degrees in their absence.
Lottery fraud
A fraud case in Rappahannock has been turned over to the F.B.I. after an elderly woman lost nearly $9,000 to a person claiming to be from the Canadian lottery.
According the the RCSO, a woman called the sheriff’s office on March 10, to notify them that she believed her elderly aunt was caught up in a baud.
A man had contacted her claiming that she had won $215,000 in the Canadian lottery sweepstakes. The man said that the lottery required her to send in a check worth $1,000. Further requests for cash were requested as the man claimed to be stuck in customs at the border, halted at the Reagan National Airport, and requested additional duty tax money.
RCSO Sheriff Larry Sherertz said that the case was unfortunate and that the woman would probably not get her money back. “If something sounds too good to be true it probably is,” he said, “If you have not bought a lottery ticket, there is no way you can win anything.” Anyone suspecting a fraudulent solicitation should report the case immediately.
