control required the collaboration of the Volunteer Fire Departments of Castleton, Amissville, Washington and Flint Hill. In addition, the Virginia Department of Forestry was instrumental in containing the spread of the fire by digging a long trench in the forest with a bulldozer. The trench enabled the setting of controlled fires that ultimately deprived the advancing flames from further combustible material on the forest floor.
We would like to convey our heartfelt thanks to the unsung heroes of Rappahannock County: the many men and women, most of them volunteers, who are engaged in firefighting and other types of rescue work. They all put their own safety on the line to save the fives and property of their fellow citizens. They not only deserve our gratitude but our utmost admiration and support.
