A first glance at the exfoliating bark of a river birch might lead you to believe that something is wrong with it. Perhaps you think the tree has a funky fungus, or that someone went crazy with a weed eater. However, the peeling bark makes this Virginia native one of the most attractive trees in the winter landscape.
Preferences: * Full or partial sun. * Prefers moist soil, but performs well in dry soils. * Soils should be is slightly acidic or have a neutral pH. * Prune in summer through autumn as sap flows winter through spring.
Attributes: * Highly resistant to the Bronze Birch Borer, a pest which kills other types of birch trees. * Can be used as a large shade tree or specimen tree and is beautiful in group planting.
