‘Babel’ in any
language is powerful

This is a series of tales set in various spots around the world - Tbkyo, Morocco, Tunisia and Mexico. Each tale is a separate story and one must stay awake and alert to follow the movie. You will also find yourself looking for dues to which country you are visiting. RAAC brings “Babel” to the Theatre on Gay Street, Washington, Virginia, Friday, March 16, at 8:00 p.m.
Rinko Kikuchi landed an Oscar nomination for Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role for her work as a deaf teenager living in Japan. You half expect Rinko to commit suicide throughout the movie, so severe is her mental disturbance. Susan (Cate Blanchette) and Richard (Brad Pitt) are an unhappily married couple on vacation in Morocco. Susan is hit by a misfired rifle shot while on a bus and Richard attempts to care for her without knowing the language of the country. Their Mexican maid, Amelia, played by Adriana Barraza, who was also nominated for Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role, is forced to taka their two children to a wedding in Mexico with her nephew Santiago (Gail Garcia Bernal) driving and doing a bad job of it. (We enjoyed Bernal here in “Motorcycle Diaries.”) Amelia and Santiago face eye-opening immigration problems and we watch as Amelia stumbles around the desert in high heels searching for her charges.
This movie earned a Golden Globe for Best Picture, seven Academy Award nominations and accolades for director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and writer, Guillermo Arriaga. Arriaga proved to be outstanding as he worked with amateur actors in a sophisticated film The movie is rated R for violence, some graphic nudity, sexual content, language and sbme drug use. Run time is 142 minutes.
