Providing a focal point gives balance and structure. Scale it to the size of the garden. It can be a weeping Japanese maple, a water feature, such as a fountain or bird bath, or a group of ornamental boulders. Place it off-center to avoid an overly artificial effect.
Container gardening is an. excellent option for people with severely limited space. The containers can happily occupy an area as small as a deck, a patio, or front steps. One advantage here is that if the effect turns out to be unsatisfactory, or the sun is inadequate, they can easily be picked up, moved or rearranged. Almost anything can be used as a container: urns, stone planters, bird baths, wheelbarrows, day and porcelain pots of all sizes, shapes, textures and colors.
