But suppose one wants the dog to have the run of the yard, keeping the owner company on rambles? Certain precautions will have to be taken. It is assumed that the yard is fenced; if not, it should be for the dog’s safety. Many dogs like to run along the length of the fence, making a grand show of terrorizing marauding interlopers who happen to be passing by. So plan for a three-foot wide separation between the fence and the flower beds abutting it. A heavy layer of cedar chips will keep the space finom turning into an unsightly stretch of worn-down churned up earth.
