Over the years, the transmission line has been knocked down numerous times by falling trees and branches, but this was one of the rare occasions when a live wire would ignite the vegetation on the ground. Because of the power outage, I couldn’t use any of our cordless telephones. Fortunately, we kept one of the old-fashioned specimens that can operate without an electric outlet. So I called 911, and to my great relief there was a *friendly voice on the other end of the line, reassuring me that the firefighters would be on their way shortly.
