For those unable to visit Ireland this St. Patrick’s Day, stop ‘ by an authentic Irish farmhouse just off Interstate 81. The historic house was originally located in County Tyrone in Northern Ireland and is now on vie in Staunton, Va as part of the Frontier Culture Museum.
The day trip to Staunton starts in Washington taking you on U.S. 211 west as you wind your way over the mountains on and into the valley. Once you reach Interstate 81, travel is fairly speedy making the trip to Staunton just over an hour and a half.
The Frontier Culture Museum is an expansive outdoor exhibit with authentic European buildings carefully dismantled from their country of origin. Today they stand in their historical excellence carefully rebuilt at the museum site. Besides the Irish house, other European farm JH|H exhibits include an English farm, a German farm, and an Irish forge. The museum grounds are divided into different cultural farms, each historical I building illustrates the lives and cultures of European immigrants who moved to the IF Shenandoah Valley in the early 19th century. The idea for the museum was sparked in 1976 by the celebration of America’s independence and the center’s opening day was September 9,1988. Since its initial opening the project continues to expand.
The most recent effort centers on an exploratory trip to Nigeria, as the museum works to include African-American culture in the exhibit.
