To create a little bit of England in Virginia, both Fawcetts stressed the importance of a well-trimmed, carefully manicured lawn in setting off brightly colored flower beds. Careful edging is essential. But as with plants and flowers, the difference in climate presents difficulties.
“Grasses, more than any other kind of plant, are sensitive to climate,” Richard Fawcett said. “The grasses that will grow readily in England are completely different from those found in America, except on putting greens. They can be cropped much shorter and continue to grow at lower temperatures, such as the temperatures we had here in early January. On the other hand, they cannot stand high temperatures or drought. The biggest problem many have with an English lawn is the growth of moss.”
