In the training that the young actors receive, I stress that it is all about the acting; let the words do the work for you, place yourself firmly in the circumstance and find the character’s quality and intention provided by the playwright. But with these directives in mind, I know that it is so often the trappings of the character, the costumes,- that are that extra added stimulation for the actor. For example, we speak of “character shoes,” often the first piece of costume that the actor finds, to define their role. It is as if “walking in someone else’s shoes is the first step to understanding the part.

For the “Shakespearean Pageant” costume designer Marie Scavetti has already come up with innovative sketches that will help the actors play their parts. The Muses will
