Glass and plastic each have their advantages. Glass is by far the better conductor of light, and unless it is broken, it will not need to be replaced. On the other hand, it does get broken. It is also much heavier.
A plastic-covered building can be moved to another site with relative ease. The cost of plastic is roughly a sixth to a tenth that of glass. However, Polyurethane deteriorates under light and must be replaced every year. Polyvinyl, with good care, will last up to five years, but costs two to five times as much as polyurethane.
