A lot of working families in this county are struggling to make ends meet. Many house payments have jumped as much as $150 a month and some have jumped even higher due to the tax increase from last year. With the combination of the higher fuel prices and the slow economy, working-class people are having a rough time maintaining their budget.
The Board of Supervisors have said they want no change. However, they are proposing a new modem county office building at a cost of about $2 million. The supervisors say it will save approximately $63,000 a year in rent. However, in reality it will cost more than the $63,000 to maintain a new building.
Also, the county is considering going in with three other counties to build a new jail. Our part of that cost would be $8 million, not to mention the cost of staffing and maintaining a new jail. In addition, the county wants to maintain the existing jail. We just can’t afford it; we will just have to do with what we have.
Citizens of Rappahannock, we need to speak up and start going to the school ! board and supervisors meetings to express our opinions on how the county should spend our money. i
I’ve spoken to many county residents and all are upset with the way our board is handling business. We can- < > not afford any more out-of-pocket taxes. We have hit bottom! There is no more money to be had from the residents of ' Rappahannock County!!
