It was only iuck mm the Panthers from widening their one-point margin. They kept the pressure on the RMA goalie as the clock ran down. A clean shot by Lucky McCoy was just a foot too high, barely clearing the top of the box. An attempt by Oliver went just a foot or so wide to the left as did a scoring try by Doug McCabe. Desperation saves by the goalie deflected at least three boots by Mike DelGrosso. The final whistle found a Rappahannock team, strengthened by additional depth on the bench, in control and jubilant over the season's first win.
It was a different story last week. In Friday’s game against Wakefield, played on a less than regulation field, the Panthers were overwhelmed and rattled in the first half as the Owls took command with five quick goals. The Panthers gained a little composure back in the second period and even managed to threaten the Wakefield goal a couple of times after coach Peter Quinn substituted reserve players. The Owls added two more tallies before the final whistle, blanking the Panthers, 7-0.
