perfectly, and so did the massive white-brick building on the corner of Main and Madison Streets.
They had seen it before, when it was being renovated for a French restaurant, on a drive to the Shenandoah Valley from their home In Bethesda, Md. “We said, ‘Oh, isn’t that a handsome building,’ ha-ha,” Watson said.
They found the building in July 1981, and by October, Welch had finished the renovation plans. The actual renovation took six months, and Windsor House opened exactly on schedule in February.
That was an accomplishment, since the building had been empty several years and was “in total disrepair,” Watson said. “I walked through and said, ‘No Way.”’
But they renovated the upstairs first and moved in, a change easier for Welch than Watson, who had grown up in Manhatten and always lived in or around big cities.
