Even though the election is three years in the future, such a move by Mr. Dalton would be significant. Many in the GOP, as well as independent conservative leaders, have been urging the former Governor to seek a second term as chief executive.
They argue he would have the best chance of recapturing the governor’s mansion of any of the prospective Republican candidates.
But Mr. Dalton has said he is happy practicing law and is not ready to make a commitment about running or not running. He is said to feel he can wait a while - a year or more - before he decides whether he is in or out of the race, or aligns himself with another candidate.
It is, of course, possible that Mr. Dalton is playing his cards even closer to his vest, and that the Durrette rumor is not far off the mark.
It is also known that Mr. Coleman has discussed his possible candidacy with Mr. Dalton, but with inconclusive results. Some party strategists place the blame largely on Mr. Coleman for the Republicans’ disastrous triple loss in the elections last November.
