Mary Mason, who is a waitress and night manager at the Ice House Cafe in Herndon, says she trys to “treat people like I like to be treated.”
When customers walk into the Ice House Cafe, she says she wants to put them at ease and make them feel comfortable.
“Some customers will come in and say, ‘hello, Mary, Know a good Joke?” she says. But others may indicate they just want to be left alone.
The potential to make “good money every day” as a waiter or waitress is a drawing card for most.
Susan King and Buffy Rhodes, waitresses at the Tortilla Factory in Herndon, say they enjoy their work, and they make good pay for the hours they work, but it annoys them when they do not even get a 15 percent tip off a table, “especially when they do all of the extras.”
