The Rappahannock County Welfare Department has a fresh and smiling face behind the desk in the social worker’s office.
Mary Wilkins took over this week at the position vacated by Sylvia Kreitler who was promoted to social services director in July.
A native of Ohio who graduated from Kent State University with a bachelors degree in social work. Wilkins spent a year in children’s services with the Wayne County Welfare Department. She was laid off last May from that job when cutbacks in county and federal funding forced a reduction in force, eventually to school for a masters degree in social work, Wilkins decided she w anted to pursue her education in Virginia and moved to the Commonwealth in order to establish residency. She learned of the Rappahannock opening while visiting in Richmond with her sister, a nurse at a city hospital.
"As far as my career goes. I’ve always had an interest in people," Wilkins said, explaining her choice of professions. ‘‘It's always seemed important to me to do something worthwhile, something to help people."
