In a recent wine competition, Piedmont, owned by Mrs. Thomas S. Furness, received the Governor’s Trophy for its 1980 Chardonnay, judged the finest in the state; Oasis Vineyard won a first for its 1980 Chelois and a third for its 1980 Chancellor and Naked Mountain’s 1981 Chardonnay was awarded a first prize.
Meredyth Vineyard, a fourth Fauquier establishment is also in the limelight now as being the first state winery to export its products of Seyval Blanc and Chardonnay to, not import from, California.
At the height of their popularity, Fauquier wines are quenching the thirts and satisfying the appetlties of area diners. Managers of the four county vineyards say they are nearly sold out of most of their varieties, and with a minimal amount of advertising.
If a certain wine has not been received with overwhelming pleasure, Corrine and Dirgham Salahi of Oasis caution potential critics to be openminded and continue to sample area winery products, because no one variety is the same from year to year.
