Owings said that he gets calls from alarmed landowners about caterpillars they have found, and asked that anyone who thinks they have found a gypsy moth or a caterpillar study the markings carefully. “We get a lot of false alarms,” he said.

Characteristics

-Young caterpillars (%" - Vi”) are brown to smoky brown, with black shiny heads. When caterpillars reach Vi” or longer they have orange marks on their back.

-Mature caterpillars are charcoal gray, hairy (dark hair) with distinctive pairs of 5 blue and 6 red spots on their back and are l'/i - 2” in length. Heads change to dull cream or yellow in color with dark lines.

-Caterpillars emerge in late April or early May and feed thru mid-June-early July.

-Gypsy moths never make a tent or webbing in the tree, but young caterpillars hang from a silken threat only early in the season (late April-early May).

Among the Elizabethans those desiring red or yellow apples bored a hole in the tree's trunk with an augur, mixed pigment of the wished-for color with water, poured the liquid into the hole and stopped it with a pin of the tree’s wood.
