“There Is this one guy who comes in, a typical hippie. He always comes in and lounges in a booth and sticks his feet in the aisle. I’m always tripping over his feet.
“And another guy sits at the bar all day and drinks martinis. He’s a magician so all day he does card tricks for us.”
Smith, a native of Manchester, New Hampshire, likes dealing with the public and can “usually overcome people who are nasty.”
Another drawback, according to Williamson, who lives in Sterling, is working with the typical all-women staff.
I don’t know why, but women seem jealous of one another as far as tips, looks and tables go,” she said.
“What burns me,” said Polly Shutts, “is when you go out of your way to make sure the service is good, You make four or five trips, then (your party) leaves 75 cents on the table. Waitresses are dependent on tips. I’ve had good days though,” she said.
