The equipment you will find in the kitchen will vary with the different foods that are served and the chefs preference in preparing foods. The one item you will find in many homes, which makes cooking so much easier, is a blender. This is one item that will never be found in the kitchen of chef Robert Chiovolonia, who works at SixtySeven Waterloo in Warrenton. Chiovolonia said that he would much prefer some hands, a little water and a mortar and pestle since they work wonders.

Another item which many chefs will not use is a microwave oven. Several chefs expressed concern with the color of microwaved food and Chef George Richa of Cedars Inn in Calverton said it makes meats tougher.

Most chefs start their careers by assisting a chef or attending a culinary school.
