Working as a waitress at the Wayside Inn Restaurant in Middletown may be Just a little different than working anywhere else. It’s not Just the history of the more than 200year-old landmark or its many rooms, (which force the workers to negotiate a lot of steps.)
It may be said that the feeling of family that pervades the staff and management is a bit unusual. But what the customers at Wayside see and enjoy, is the period costume, ruffled cap and long gingham skirt that takes them back to an earlier, and perhaps more restful era as they dine.
Of course, carrying trays of drinks and food through the different levels of different rooms, can be tricky in a long skirt. To today’s young women, maybe the prairie skirt will be an aid, but to the uninitiated, both Millie Barr, head waitress at Wayside, and Joan Pangle, a seven-year veteran, warn, the costume takes a little gettingI used-to.
