CHARLIE COMPTON, mail carrier was featured on the front page of the Rappahannock News of October 5, 1972. Compton was retiring from his route in Amissville after 31 years of service. He had covered the most extensive route in the state, 85 miles serving 400 homes. His retirement was effective October 6, 1972. One of the homes featured on the house tour that year was Thornton River Farms at Viewtown. Betty Lou Jenkins, daughter of Jonas Jenkins of Washington, was one of 42 students at Radford College named to the Dean’s list for the summer quarter. The State Department of Education awarded Rappahannock County $45,940 to provide reading and special education instruction for 226 pupils in grades one through four. Mrs. Charlie Jenkins opened her door of her home on Gay Street in Washington one Sunday afternoon to see a black bear in front of her house.
