News of October 5, 1950,
it was reported that Rep. Burr P. Harrison had presented a weed to Dorothy Davis, Mayor of Washington: “Congressman Burr P. Harrison of the 7th District was at the post office of the county Tuesday, October 3, to greet his many friends.
“While at the courthouse in Washington, the Congressman spied a weed on the courthouse lawn. Plucking the green specimen from the earth, he presented it to her honor, the Mayor, Mrs. George H. Davis. It is reported that she said something about the weed having been grown outside the county and brought in but, anyway, she accepted Congressman Harrison’s gift most graciously. ”
Mrs. Davis and her council endured much good-natured teasing. There was a womanless beauty contest at the Rappahannock Fair, introduced with a verse starting: You’ve prdbaBTy heard from far and near.
