Francie and Henry met in photography school at Brooks Institute. They both went on to the Los Angelas Art Center and Francie later took classes at the Rochester Institute as well. They've also taken part in workshops conducted by master of photography Ansel Adams. “Say Ansel Adams and immediately, you get attention," Henry noted with a wry grin. He and Francie were showing slides they’d taken in South America to their fellow workshoppers. “Ansel came through and looked at them and made a couple of flattering comments. When someone at the diety level says something good about your work, you begin to take it seriously.” Henry added.
Committed to careers in photography, the two immigrated to the Washington area from California. "The west coast filled up with easterners. There was no room left for the natives!" Henry joked. They had a contract on property at Dupont Circle where they planned to open a studio and gallery. But they spotted one of Washington realtor Eileen Day’s ads in the Post. “It was one of those ‘not many left like it...unique...one-of-akind t h i n gs ,' ’ r e c a 11 e d Francie.
“She pretty much sold us on the county,” added Henry.
That first unique, one-of-akind property didn’t appeal to the co..pie but they kept looking and eventually settled on an old house perched on a hilltop near Battle Run. “It really turned into a very special place for us. We’re stuck in Rappahannock 'County for better or for worse—we like to think it’s for better—because we love it." Henry said. "There are lots of people who were born in the county who have nothing to compare it to. It’s infinitely nicer than the nicest places in California.”
Noting that the two of them have traveled widely across the U.S., Francie recalled how their enchantment with Rappahannock is renewed everytime they return home. "You just can’t beat what we have here." she emphasized.
Francie and Henry lived in Rappahannock full-time from 1972 to 1978 while she worked for the Smithsonian and the National Zoo and he free lanced. Francie gave up
