At least three members ol the jury panel said they had read about the case in newspapers and were excused when they admitted that knowledge might influence them. Another panel member was excused after she told the court she has "a friend who knows the defendant in this case and has spoken sympathetically about him."

Still others were excused because of their views of insanity defenses in murder trials. One man cited the recent Hinckley verdict in the assasination attempt of President Reagan when he said he has a “hang-up on psychiatric testimony” and that "there have been past trials where that seemed to have gone too far in that direction.”

Another man agreed, telling Judge Penn: “I’m inclined tt> believe the (insanity defense) is overdone, overused in the courts as a way to be freed of heinous crimes.”
