Rome - In the fall of 1816, a fruit grower, Joel Gilett, brought a number of young apple trees from Putnam’s nursery at Marietta, Ohio, to a farm near Proctorville. The next spring, while preparing the apple trees for planting, Gillett discovered that one had sprouted from the rootstock. He discarded the tree and gave it to his son, who planted it in a corner of a field away from the family orchard on the banks of the Ohio River. It produced such fine apples that it soon became a popular one for further propogation. In the year 1832, it was named Rome Beauty after the Rome township in which the Gillett farm was located. )
