March, 1982, rank Rappahannock fifth among the counties of Virginia in apple production. In 1978, the crop reporting service says, fruit sales accounted for one-third of farm cash receipts. The number of apple trees planted has been on a steady decline in Rappahannock since its peak in 1930, when over 300,000 trees graced the county’s rolling hills.
