in the opening minutes of the second quarter. Cindy Weaver retaliated with a short jumper of her own and Jordan worked her way inside to keep the score tied at 16 all with 3 minutes on the clock. But Missy Mellons, the Cougar’s outstanding guard, started on a streak that saw her hitting from inside and outside, going the length of the floor and battling for a lay-up and tossing in buckets from the free throw line. She gave the visitors a 17-20 edge at the half.
And then in the third period, the game belonged entirely to the girls from Manassas Park. Playing aggressived defense that denied the ball to Jordan, Rapp’s top scorer, the Cougars declawed the Panthers, holding RCHS scoreless for six minutes and 58 seconds while adding 12 points to their total. Butler finally made a shot with two seconds remaining to give RCHS 19 to Park’s 32.
In the final quarter, the Panthers pulled it together a little, putting 11 points on the scoreboard. The two Cindys—Bywaters and| Weaver—bombed a couple from outside, Tupper hit from the foul line and underneath and little Donna Atkins embarrassed the much taller defenders with another strong drive down the center of the lane but it wasn’t enough. Sparked by Mellons and center Pam Hall at both ends of the court, the Cougars forced turnovers and then converted Rapp mistakes into Park baskets to end the same at 30-42.
Mellons and Hall tied for high honors with 13 apiece. Top scorers for Rappahannock were Tupper and Jordan, each with seven.
The jayvee contest had a happier ending as the junior Panthers topped the Manassas Park visitors, 23
