The Rappahannock Health Department has employed its first full-time dentist, Dr. Edward Hughes, a recent • graduate of Maharry Medical i College School of Dentistry in | Nashville, Tennessee
Dr. Hughes is on assignment for the National Health Service, paying back a scholarship that calls for four ! years of service at a public health facility. , “This is a new approach,” 1 Hughes said. “Formerly, a dentist would have been assigned from a state dentistry pool.”
Hughes, who did his undergraduate work at the University of Maryland, said that he was familiar with Rappahannock County as a sight-seer in his younger days. In addition to regular screenings at the schools and office hours for both children and adults, Hughes hopes to start some new programs for Rappahannock.
“I hope to conduct oral cancer screenings at least every other year,” he said. “This early detection procedure is something that provides a real health service for everyone.”
Hughes also wants to stress prevention of dental decay and gum disease. “I will provide some training chairside,” he said, “but I also want to present programs at the schools and I will be available to speak at local organizations.”
