Around the turn of the century, Sperryville business man P. H. O’Bannon operated a general store in the town and bought packed and shipped apples from local growers.
Apple-frying plants and cider mills appeared in Sperryville to prolong the life of the county's favorite fruit. Apple production climbed as manufacturers found more ways to process and market apple products. In 1925, Rappahannock ranked seventh in apple production for the state, by 1956 the county was third in the state, and it held this rank until 1963.
