An Even Darker Side But as poignant as the Mattie Dudley story may be, there is an even darker and more troubling side to it. That side has to do with the haunting certainty that there are many other Mattie Dudleys out there whose names will never make the headlines. Her case reached the attention of the governor, the Congress, and even President Reagan. Sadly, it is likely that far too many similar situations never get beyond the red tape snarls in the local welfare offices.
When regulations get in the way of manifest equity or just plain horse-sense, ways should be available to change them, waive them or in some other way give them a degree of clear-eyed flexibility.
No such efforts were made in the case at hand. Concern for the regulation was, it seems, simply put ahead of concern for the person.
While this may be sound bureaucratic practice, it makes things mighty rough on the Mattie Dudleys of this world.
