Cato, who lived and wrote in the third century B.c., speaks of seven apple varities. Pliny, in the first century A.D., names 36 varieties. In the centuries that followed, apple orchards were planted all over Europe. The first apples that were harvested in America came from trees planted by the Pilgrims. The first commercial apple tree nursery was establishe in Flushing, Long Island, in 1730.
Dr. D. C. Jarvis, the “Vermont Country Doctor” built a whole philosophy of folk medicine around apple cider vinegar and honey. He prescribes it as a liniment to relieve lameness, a cure for poison ivy, an ointment for burns, a disinfenctant for impetigo, a shampoo for ringworms, and a hangover treatment.
