Rap Owings, Agricultural Extension Agent for Rappahannock, said that county orchardists are reporting varied crops. “Some growers are having a really good year, and others are way down," he said. In general, Owings said that apple production is slightly down from last year, and he speculated on the reasons.
“We had good rain until the end of the apple growing season,” he said. “This could have hurt the orchards some.” Owings said that perhaps the main reason for the slight drop was that last year was such a good apple year that trees just aren’t bearing as heavily this year. “For the most part, orchardists are pleased," he said.
