In Next Year, Jerusalem author Carla Eugster has used the form of the Passover Seder service to explore one family’s ideas and emotions surrounding the theme of freedom.
“Poets have always used a formal structure to discuss intense emotions,” Eugster said “The structure gives the poet a chance to explore ideas without becoming too abstract” Eugster mentioned Paradtae Lost as an example of poetry taking a religious structure.
Eugster pointed out that she has borrowed freely from other Jewish traditions and ceremonies: “Just as in many other forms of poetry,- the poet can violate the form for the sake of the poem,” she said
Eugster has used the Seder ceremony involving four glasses of wine as the starting point for discussion of different kinds of personal and public freedom. The first glass of wine is a symbol of freedom from political oppression; the second of freedom from neuroses; the third of freedom from ignorance; the fourth of freedom from the law.
