Elisabeth and C. E. Johnson, Jr., tell us in their book: Fact, Fiction, Foolishness and the Fairfax Story: Rappahannock County, Va. History, that shortly after the Civil War, C. B. Wood, who owned a nursery here, sent a barrel of Albemarle Pippins to Queen Victoria, thus creating a market for Rappahannock apples in England. From then on, much of Rappahannock's apple harvest was exported to England, where chilly springs and early falls limited the number of apples produced.
