Tammy Atkins, also of Sperryville, agreed. “My favorite is pizza,” she said. All the children interviewed said that they liked pizza best.
Burke said that in planning meals she plans just as she would for her own family, using foods from the basic four groups. “Millions of women do this every day, but on a smaller scale,” she said. Burke has tried to decrease sugar and fats in lunches and offers, a la carte, at the high school, fresh fruit, granola bars and orange juice to supplement sandwiches brought from home.
Tomorrow, Friday, as part of the state’s school lunch week observance, all schools throughout Virginia will serve the same meal: hamburgers and french fries.
