The old guard at Rappahannock’s country stores is changing. There are no longer any Bradfords at the Flint Hill Storehouse. There’s a new set of Burkes at Burke’s Store in Woodville and some new faces at Sperryville’s Comer Store.
Last weekend marked the end of another county institution. Theodore Barron stepped from behind the counter at Barron’s Store in Viewtown on Sunday evening, ending a family business that has lasted for over half a century.
“Now I’ll have the opportunity to do all those things 1 never had time for while I was running the store." he said of his retirement, taking a few .minutes out as usual to chat with a visitor while simultaneously waiting on customers and helping his wife, dargaret, with one final inventory. “In summer. I’ve got plenty of grass to mow,” he added jokingly.
Even though he will no longer be minding the business, Theodore Barron will still be around.
Since the Vietown Post Office was established in 1890. all its postmasters have been named either Spilman or Barron. Margaret Barron, the current postmaster has no plans to change that now. With the post office’s mascot, Peamit, her constant companion, Margaret will still be in the little comer cubby hole at the front of the store, sorting mail for her neighbors. “Theodore will be in and out. He’s going to help me in the post office and I have plenty to keep him busy," she announced.
