With 2:03 remaining in the opening period, Atkins popped one up from almost under the backboard, extending the Panther lead to four. The visitors from Manassas Park doubleteamed Karen Jordan inside but the extra attention given the RCHS sharp shooter left Butler open in the corner to stretch the lead to 12-6.

The Panthers went to the foul line only once in the opening quarter as Manassas Park’s girls committed their fifth personal with just over a minute left. Jordan’s shot bounced off the backboard and on the fight for the rebound, Butler committed Rapp’s first foul in the game. But the Cougars fell short from the charity stripe to leave the difference at 12-6 at the buzzer.
