nest, the eggs hatched. Again, mother hummingbird was off with the rising sun, returning at sundown to care for her young. “She has to eat every 15 minutes during the day. Then at night, her metabolism slows down so that she can stay in the pest and feed the babies,” Martha said. ■ The eggs hatched two days apart and after 21 days, the fledglings left the nest at the same two-day interval.
One of the hummingbirds came back to the Sutherland's window and hung in the air while he — or she— looked inside. “1 don't know for certain whether it was one of the babies or the mother," Martha said. But she guesses that it was the more inquisitive of the young birds. “One of them would follow us with his head every time we walked by the nest.”
The Sutherlands have a photographic record of their wildlife-watching experience. The pictures show the nest with its miniature eggs and then holding the miniature birds. When the little home was abandoned, they also recovered the delicated cobweb construction as a momento.
“We wasted more time this summer watching those huffimingbirdsl*’ joked Martha in mock complaint. But it’s a sure bet that the Sutherlands are ready to “waste” twice as many hours again next summer should their winged visitors return.
