After learning that MCI Telecommunications Corporation has filed for a special use permit to put a 200 to 250 foot tower on Bessie Belle Mountain, the Rappahannock planning commissioners agreed on Wednesday to exercise their right to advise the board of zoning appeals.
Although the zoning ordinance provides for the planning group to make recommendations to the BZA (which will hear MCI’s permit request), the planners have never before availed themselves of that option.
In addition to applying for a special use permit, MCI is also asking the zoning board to determine whether the proposed tower site is in an agricultural or conservation district.
Zoning administrator David Konick reported that the Telecommunications company has contracted to buy 33.4 acres of a 132 acre tract on Bessie Belle Mountain near Woodville from Gary Hinds. The company proposes to erect a microwave relay tower, a link in MCI’s Richmond to Winchester route, on the site.
