Drought-stricken corn can make a good quality feed. Digestibility per unit of dry matter will be comparable to com silage made from com with normal ear development. Feed efficiency will not be as good as normal com silage and is estimated to be 80% of that expected in high quality com silage.

To improve the quality of silage from stunted corn, it is suggested that the corn remain in the field as long as practical. Stunted com, although it may not make an ear, will contain considerable moisture in the stalk. This corn will make better silage if harvested when the majority of leaves are “fired”. Even when the plant was “browned”, it will be difficult to make a silage containing 30% dry matter or higher.
