In other work, the road at the north entrance to Mathews Arm campground will lie realigned and widened to allow cars with trail ers to move into a slow lane before making their turn.
The entrance road to the Elkwallow Wayside will undergo similar widening for safety purposes. Places where the road has settled will be brought up to level and repaved.
Delays in traffic may occur at times for up to an hour, park officials warn. However, attempts will be made by project inspectors to keep all delays under JO minutes. Park rangers at the four entrance stations will have up-to-the-minute information on any construction delays.
Skyline Drive provides 71 overlooks for visitors along its 10f>-mile length. It is the only vehicular access within the ridgetop park. Construction began in 1931 with funding from the Federal Drought Relief Administration.
Most of its construction was done by local contractors. Hundreds of local people were given jobs building the new national park and the Skyline Drive. In 1933, when the Civilian Conservation Corps was formed, its members did some work on the drive although they worked primarily on restoration and erosion control.
The Skyline Drive has undergone few realignments or major repairs since its construction.
