in the early 1970’s. One thing was for sure—this rack was in a class by itself. I told George 1 thought he should have the antlers measured by the Boone and Crockett Club, but he replied that he thought there were bigger ones around.
Years passed, and it was not until February of 1981, when 1 took George to the sportsman’s show in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, that he realized what a prize he had. After examining the many award-winning deer on display we agreed that none could compare with George’s trophy. On the drive home, 1 told George, “One thing’s for sure—we are going to get your antlers measured for the Boone and Crockett record book. ”
I contacted Max Carpenter, head game biologist for the Virginia Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries, who is an official measurer for the Boone and Crockett Club. He offered to come by at his convenience and take a rough measurement, just to see if the antlers could make the book.
The day arrived, and Carpenter measured the antlers. His rough measurement totaled 187 points! "It’s bigger than I thought," he exclaimed. “It will go well up in the record book.
