out his role as vice-president in the new and strong manner, he had “faced down President Marcos in the Philippines,” had “wrangled with Prime Minister John Vorster over South Africa (The Times does not report where the wrangling took place) and had “softened up” Prime Minister Menacham Begin at Camp David.
A picture of the V.P. facing down President Marcos would be interesting to see. Marcos comes very close to qualifying as an inscrutable Oriental. The sight of such a near Oriental losing inscrutability and face might well have been a photographic first. A picture of Walter wrangling with John, either in Washington or Pretoria or Johannesburg might not have been very revealing, for John Vorster is by reputation and inheritance an inscrutable Dutchman. A recording of this historic wrangle, however, might have found a place in the National Archives beside “Richard and Nikita in the kitchen.” The softening of Menachan Begin could not be shown, I am sure, either by pictures or recording, but would need, or does need, sustaining psychological and historical data.
Politics, at least at the vice-presidential level, seem to be moving into a rougher field of action, of toughness and of confrontation in which the language of the boxing ring, of the night club and of professional football may have to be applied.
